Birthday

November 30

Monster trucks have been a part of Colt Stephens life from a very young age. His father, Scott Stephens, was among the pioneers of the sport with his King Krunch truck and Colt was right there with his father at every opportunity. Colt was given an opportunity to be a part of Monster Jam with his first shows in Australia in 2014. From there, he seemingly “disappeared,” but in reality, he was the anonymous driver of Doom’s Day until getting the chance to get behind the wheel of the FS1 Cleatus. Colt was then a fixture on the Monster Jam TV scene, but competed in a full season again in 2023 behind the wheel of the new ThunderROARus, giving the truck and Colt their first World Finals win during Freestyle in Nashville, TN. He added to his World Finals tally in 2024, winning the High Jump World Championship.

career highlights

about

  • What are some of your interests/hobbies/favorite pastimes?
I like to spend time at the lake and river in the summer. My hobby is working on anything with a motor. I especially like building and adding accessories to trucks and jeeps.
  • Who are your role models?
My Paw Paw and father. I hope I can be as successful and hard working as they are.
  • Do you have any ‘pre-show’ rituals you run through?
I like to be in my truck extra early so I can visualize the track and what I need to do. I even press the pedals and shift gears.
  • What’s something a lot of people don’t know about you?
A lot of people don’t know that I was a commercial diver in the Gulf of Mexico for four years, and that I was the “anonymous” Doom’s Day driver for the last two years.
  • What is your favorite memory on or off the racetrack?
I don’t have a specific memory but my favorite memories are of the days when my dad had King Krunch and I was able to travel the country with him in the big rig.
  • What is your most prized possession?
    My family.

life on the road

  • What is the best and worst thing about being on the road every weekend with Monster Jam?
The best thing about being on the road is meeting all of the great new fans and knowing that I am putting a smiling on someone’s face. The worst is being away from my wife and family.
  • While on the road, what is your favorite thing to do during your free time?
When I’m on the road, I like to visit all of the local race and four-wheel drive shops to see what’s new and different out there.
  • How do you keep fit?
I keep fit by doing Crossfit when I can but mostly I work outside digging holes, fixing fences and hauling hay on the farm.
  • What item(s) can you not live without while traveling on the road with Monster Jam?
I was given a necklace when my grandfather passed away that is my good luck charm. I can’t leave the house without it.
  • What is your favorite city to travel to? Why?
Cozumel, Mexico. It’s a great place to kick back and relax and the water is so blue and clear.

career

  • How did you get started competing in Monster Jam?
My dad was the owner/creator of the King Krunch Monster Jam truck. I went to my first show when I was just two weeks old. I traveled the country with my dad any time that I could. When we sold the truck, it was like something was missing. In 2013, I was given the opportunity to crew on the King Krunch truck again. When I was at one of the shows, Feld Entertainment approached me and asked if I wanted to drive. I couldn’t believe it! My dream of driving then became a reality.
  • What is your favorite part about competing in Monster Jam?
My favorite part about competing in Monster Jam is the feeling you get when you’re in front of a packed stadium cheering. Just knowing that I am about to send a 10,000 pound Monster Jam truck soaring through the air is an amazing feeling.
  • How would you describe your driving style?
I would describe my driving style as calculated. I walk the track over and over looking at all of the angles. I like to find big hits with smooth transitions. Then I find the one that’s going to send the truck to the upper deck and hope everyone has their cameras ready!
  • What advice would you give to kids who want to become a Monster Jam driver?
Never give up. Keep trying and work hard. You never know what that opportunity you’ve been looking for is right around the corner.
  • What is your greatest memory as a Monster Jam driver?
Winning racing in New Orleans in 2016. Since I was driving Doom’s Day I wasn’t able to talk to the fans afterwards though. I can’t wait to be able to thank them all this year!
  • Who in Monster Jam do you look up to for inspiration?
    Marc McDonald

fun facts

  • Do you have any nicknames?
    None
  • What’s your favorite movie?
    Days of Thunder
  • What’s your favorite television show?
Gas Monkey Garage (Fast N Loud)
  • What’s your favorite color?
    Blue
  • What’s your favorite thing to eat?
Tex Mex, or anything with a lot of cheese!
  • How would your friends and family describe you?
    Wide open
