Weekend Race Recap

Friday 7:30 p.m. -

It may have been cold outside on the streets of Helsinki, Finland, but inside Hartwall Arena is was scorching hot as some of the biggest names in Monster Jam thrilled a huge crowd with a night of action that emphasized just how much parity there is in the sport today, with four different drivers getting at least a share of a win in the four competitions held on the opening night of this four event weekend.

Neil Elliott led the way, powering Maximum Destruction to the win in the donut contest, then tying Chad Tingler and Grave Digger for the freestyle win. Also visiting the winners stage on Friday were Dan Evans, who won the racing bracket driving Jetix, and John Seasock, who took the wheelie contest victory in his Batman machine.

The night started with the sky wheelie battle where Seasock launched his unique, black Monster Jam truck skyward to get the truck close to 90 degrees to the ground and the judges scored Batman’s wheelie one point better than Jetix after Evans danced the truck across the crushed cars, walking the Jetix TV network sponsored ride all the way back onto the concrete floor in the non-dirt event.

Then in racing it was Evans, who has won more race events on this year’s Monster Jam World Tour than anyone else adding to his total by mowing through the biggest guns in the business on his way to the triumph. After winning his opening round race on the straight line course over Maximum Destruction Evans then drove Jetix to victory over Chad Tingler and Grave Digger to earn a berth in the finals. On the other side of the bracket rookie Candice Jolly had one of her most impressive runs to date, eliminating first Batman and then Sweden’s Anders Flogard in Thor to set up her date with Evans in the Championship Race. As has become her trademark the Florida girl cut a great starting light, but Evans powered Jetix past her at the finish line for the exciting victory.

Next up the Finns were treated to an amazing donut competition where they got the best the two legendary trucks had to offer. First Tingler showed off a wild, lengthy round of “Digger Donuts” to take the lead with a score of 29, but Elliott was able to go him one better, the judges all holding up scorecards that had a “10” on each following Elliott’s dizzying round of Max-D’s patented cyclones.

Wrapping up the first night of action during this fourth visit for Monster Jam to Helsinki was the highly anticipated Freestyle Competition and none of the Monster Jam superstars disappointed the appreciative crowd. In the end the judges could not pick between Elliott’s big air assault in Maximum Destruction that ended with a bonus round of cyclones and Tingler ragged edge, high energy Grave Digger freestyle. Both trucks scored 27’s to tie for the win with three more chances to wow the Finnish crowd this weekend.

One of the best Freestyle Motocross competitions of this year’s Monster Jam World Tour, not to mention one of the toughest to judge because all of the competitors were so close and nailed distinctive moves throughout, was won by Swedish rider Frederick Bergeron.

Saturday 1:30 p.m. -

Dan Evans continued his marvelous 2007 Monster Jam World Tour by winning a European version of the “Double Down”, driving Jetix to a sweep of both the racing and freestyle competitions in front of a sold out crowd in Helsinki’s Hartwall Arena Saturday afternoon.

The second of the four events in Finland began with Chad Tingler powering Grave Digger to the win in the sky wheelie contest, out pointing Neil Elliott in Maximum Destruction by one point according to the three Finnish judges. Then in racing, as was the case in Friday night’s Helsinki opener, Evans took control. With the brackets being set by a draw among the competitors Evans pulled the number one, which has been lucky for him on the entire tour across the Atlantic Ocean. Whether it has been a draw for qualifying order or a draw to actually set the round one pairings, Evans has won every event in which he has drawn the number one, and it happened again Saturday afternoon. Evans powered Jetix to an opening round win over reigning World Racing Champion John Seasock in Batman, but Batman still advanced to the semifinals as the fastest loser of round one. In the final four match-ups it was Evans and Jetix eliminating Elliott and Maximum Destruction, while Seasock used the reprieve from the defeat in round one to knock off Tingler and Grave Digger in the other semifinal, earning another shot at the red hot Evans. As it was in round one though, Evans again was the man, powering Jetix past Batman in the Championship Race.

As expected the donut competition was all Max-D. Elliott brought the Euro crowd to its feet with another incredible round of cyclones for the win, although his score of 28 was just one point better than Seasock who nailed a sensational set of Batman donuts. Tingler had hoped to give Elliott a run for the money in the donut contest, but Grave Digger broke an input shaft early in his donut performance, sidelining the truck for the rest of the afternoon.

With Grave Digger out of freestyle it was Evans who took advantage, turning in one of his best arena freestyles of the year in the Ford truck sponsored by the Jetix TV network. Evans and Jetix had the lead when Elliott brought Maximum Destruction out for freestyle, but this time it was not to be for the truck that has won a record seven world titles. Elliott started strong but the rear steering on Max-D broke with some 40 seconds still remaining on the clock. Neil tried to continue his performance with the truck broken but was not able maneuver in the tight quarters and Jetix came away with the freestyle victory, giving the veteran Evans his first racing-freestyle sweep of this year’s Monster Jam World Tour. Air Man Dan’s score of 27 was five points better than Candice Jolly in the Monster Mutt Dalmatian and Seasock’s Batman.

For the second straight time in Helsinki Swede Frederick Bergeron used a wicked back flip as his final move to win the Freestyle Motocross battle.

Saturday 7:30 p.m. -

The two biggest names in Monster Jam dominated the competition Saturday night at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, with Maximum Destruction and Grave Digger combining to win all four of the disciplines contested in front of another loud, enthusiastic crowd on the final stop of the 2007 Monster Jam World Tour.

The Monster Jam crews had teamed up to replace the transmission in Grave Digger XVIII after a broken input shaft sidelined the black and green wrecking machine during the donut contest in the Saturday afternoon matinee and Chad Tingler’s piece was clearly back to full strength. Grave Digger then went out and took the racing portion of the program for the first time this weekend. Tingler opened the race bracket by ending Dan Evans’ winning streak, Grave Digger’s first round win over Jetix being the first racing defeat suffered by Evans in Finland. Then Tingler drove Grave Digger to a semifinal round victory over reigning World Racing Champion John Seasock in Batman to put the Digger into the Championship Race. The other side of the bracket was being dominated by impressive European driver Anders Flogard. The Swede drove his Thor truck to a first round triumph over Candice Jolly in her Monster Mutt Dalmatian, then Thor eliminated Jetix who had advanced as the fast loser in round one. The berth in the finale was the second time Flogard has put Thor into the racing championship round on this year’s Monster Jam World Tour, a feat he also accomplished last June in Gothenburg, Sweden’s Ullevi Stadium. Thor is the only European based truck to have competed in the racing finals of a Monster Jam event. Interestingly Evans may have had a hand in his own undoing during the semifinal race between Thor and Jetix. Air Man Dan spent a great deal of time over the weekend giving Flogard tips, especially on how to read the crushed cars in each racing lane to take the fastest path over the stack. Flogard soaked up the advice from the veteran and drove Thor to the semifinal win over Jetix. In the Championship Race Tingler got a great start off the slick starting line and edged Thor in yet another exciting championship race to get Team Grave Digger the event racing win.

Tingler’s win locked up what can be called the unofficial European racing championship for Evans. The veteran from Michigan has driven Jetix to five event wins on the 2007 Monster Jam World Tour European circuit, two better than Seasock who has three wins in Batman, and with only one more race on this year’s tour of Europe Dan Evans is assured of being the winningest driver overseas in ’07. Chad Tingler can be looked at as the unofficial European freestyle champion, his Grave Digger far and away having the most freestyle wins this year in Europe.

The freestyle competition turned out to be the best of the weekend so far with both Neil Elliott in Maximum Destruction and Tingler in Grave Digger earning standing ovations from the Finnish crowd for their phenomenal runs. Elliott hit the track first and destroyed everything in sight with a typical Max-D big air assault, and closed his run with another amazing set of Maximum Destruction cyclones to earn a score of 29 from the three judges. Grave Digger’s run was another high energy, spectacular performance that gave the judges a tough choice in picking a winner. In the end the judges scored Max-D two points higher than Digger. Also impressive during Saturday night’s freestyle was the Swedish pilot, Flogard, who pulled off the greatest save of his career when he pulled Thor back onto its wheels after a wild bounce off a big jump sent the truck completely sideways, but just when it appeared the truck would roll onto its roof Flogard got Thor snapped back to the upright position, thrilling the Finns in attendance. Thor finished 3rd in freestyle behind only the big two, the best freestyle finish for Thor ever in Monster Jam.

In the donut contest Tingler showed that while it may be almost impossible to beat Maximum Destruction when the cyclones start spinning, Grave Digger certainly is capable of joining Max-D at the top of this genre. Chad’s Digger Donuts may have lasted longer than any set turned in on the entire Monster Jam World Tour this year, and the judges scored both Grave Digger and Maximum Destruction with perfect scores of 30. The other monster competition was the sky wheelie battle which was also won by Elliott in Maximum Destruction.

South African Nick DeWit stopped Frederick Bergeron’s win streak in Freestyle Motocross, using a pair of back flip variations to take the Saturday night victory.

Sunday 2:00 p.m. -

The record setting 2007 Monster Jam World Tour wrapped up Sunday afternoon with one of the year’s most electrifying performances, ending with a capacity crowd in Helsinki, Finland’s Hartwall Arena on its feet and applauding Chad Tingler with his Grave Digger laying on its roof, an incredible climax to the phenomenal run of events that made this the most successful series of European dates ever for Monster Jam.

The Euro finale started and ended with Grave Digger victories and packed a ton of action and memories in between that included Dan Evans adding yet another racing victory to his series leading total and Neil Elliott earning yet another standing ovation after another breathtaking set of Maximum Destruction cyclones.

Beginning the Sunday afternoon affair with the sky wheelie contest it was Tingler and his Grave Digger winning a closely judged battle, scoring 27 from the three Finnish judges to edge Maximum Destruction by one point, with John Seasock and Batman just another point back in third place.

Then it was time for the racing program, and time for Evans to cement his status as 2007’s best Monster Jam racer in Europe. Evans knocked off Anders Flogard and Thor in the opening round, then Air Man Dan and his Jetix Ford eliminated Maximum Destruction in the semifinals to set up a showdown with the current World Racing Champion, John Seasock and Batman, in the Championship Race. As has been the case often on the European circuit Evans had to hold off a strong challenge from Batman but was up to the test, Jetix winning the racing event title for the sixth time out of the 17 racing brackets contested across the Atlantic Ocean this year.

Next up was the popular wheelie competition and again it proved to be one of the real highlights of the day, with both Tingler and Elliott showing the Finns their best. In the end the judges gave perfect scores of 30 for both the “Digger Donuts” and the “Max-D Cyclones”, ending that competition in a tie.

Fittingly wrapping up this year’s Monster Jam World Tour on a super-high note the freestyle competition was phenomenal start to finish, but Tingler saved the best for last. Chad, who far and away won more European freestyles than anyone in 2007, nailed a classic arena freestyle with non-stop action, huge air, and a final leap that landed the Digger hard onto its roof as the time clock expired, Grave Digger winning the freestyle, the final competition on this year’s European schedule that included record crowds and amazing performances throughout.

Earlier in the Freestyle Motocross shoot out Sweden’s Fredrik Berggron was back on top of the game, winning for the third time during the four event weekend in Helsinki.
