FRIDAY 7PM:

Monster Jam in Helsinki

By Joe Lowe

For the second year the World Monster Jam Tour has stopped in Helsinki Finland and the fans are ready. Friday night, the first of four big event saw a wild crowd ready to see in person what they see weekly on television. The fans were treated to the best of the best. World Champion Madusa, Monster Mutt, Hot Wheels, Superman, El Toro Loco and Grave Digger, names everybody knows pulled out all the stops with another fantastic Monster Jam

From the moment the doors opened till the last autograph was signed fans saw non-stop action. FMX featured some great riders including Yussi Seljas the number one FMX rider in Finland do a backflip that brought fans to their feet cheering for almost five minutes.

Ties in the Wheelie and Freestyle competitions demonstrate how wild the action was. Mike West and his Armageddon Jet Funny Car also added to the excitement but the main focus was on Monsters and lots of them

Announcer Lauri Salovaara came to Las Vegas with an film crew last March announced his first event with Joe Lowe and did a tremendous job educating the fans. He is one of only two people in all of Finland to drive a monster truck and brought that experience to the microphone.

SATURDAY 1PM:

Monster Jam Saturday Afternoon In Helsinki

Before a packed crowd in Hartwall Arena in Helsinki Finland the monsters of Monster Jam saw some old fans and made many news ones Saturday afternoon. Electricity filled the air from the very start with flames, rockets, loud music and even louder motors bringing fans to a fevered pitch.

FMX action was highlighted by a back flip from Helsinki’s own Yussi Seljas and an incredible double heel clicker while blindfolded by Canadian Paul Smith.

Monster truck action featured a cheer off in the Wheelie contest and in Freestyle Competition. The Donut contest was decided by one point and racing featured not one but two photo finishes. It was incredible the way the crews worked to repair several of the trucks during the afternoon performance. Monster Mutt, who broke in racing, missed the Donut Contest but the crew got it ready for Freestyle and George Balhan, new to the truck, tied with Grave Digger for the win.

Mike West again demonstrated to fans the power of his jet powered Armageddon funny car.

After a quick break all the drivers and crew worked to get things ready for event number 3 in Helsinki.

SATURDAY 7:30PM:

They came expecting to see one of the worlds greatest motorsport events and they go just that Saturday night at the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki Finland. The third of four Monster Jam events was another Incredible event featuring the might monsters in four events. The night began with a wheelie contest followed by racing so close officials had to review the videos several times before determining a winner.

Monster donut competition saw two points separate the winner, Grave Digger from the second and third place trucks, Monster Mutt and Superman. Freestyle was beyond belief as Frank Krmel drove the Hot Wheels truck to a 29 and Madusa and Grave Digger both earning a perfect score from the fans and judges.

FMX again proved to be a crowd favorite with local rider Yussi Selgas of Helsinki along with Belgian Jimmy Verburgh, Canadian Paul Smith and Kyle Lovelace of the USA all earning cheers from the fans. Armageddon driven by Mike West is something one had to see to fully understand. I will not attempt to describe it here. YOU MUST SEE IT !

SUNDAY 2PM:

Monster Jam in Helsinki Sunday Afternoon

By: Joe Lowe

By Sunday afternoon all of Helsinki was well aware of Monster Jam. The trucks had been on display for several weeks. Stories on the nightly news and daily papers told of the oversized trucks that were racing, running on two wheels and crushing cars at Hartwall Areena all weekend long. For those who had held off going to the first three events it was too much, they had to see it for themselves.

Judging by the fans stand up cheering all afternoon long and the long autograph lines after the event, you would have to say they were more than satisfied with what they experienced. At the end of the show local announcer Lauri Salovaara asked the fans if they wanted to come back. Almost in unison they answered a resounding YES.

The afternoon began with a noon pit party giving those who were fans and those who were about to become fans an opportunity to see the monsters up close and meet the drivers. The superstars of FMX were also on hand for the pit party.

One could feel the excitement build as the clock ticked ever closer to the 2pm start time. From there on out it was flames, loud music and roaring motors. The crowd loved it. A rollover by Lupe Soza in El Toro Loco during the Freestyle Competition only left the fans cheering for more.

While the results page may tell the story of a near Grave Digger sweep, it was not the case with several contests again being extremely close. Monster Mutt tied Digger in the donut contest losing in a crowd cheer off. In freestyle Hot Wheels and El Toro Loco each had 28, Monster Mutt and Superman earned a 29 each and Digger earned the only 30. Very Very close action.

Grave Digger did not fair nearly as well in racing when round one fast loser Madusa took him out in the semi-final round and went on to win.
