Since 1993, Monster Jam has made at least one appearance at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. This weekend, the FS1 West Series will be the final event at the facility, which is scheduled to close. A new facility, the Mercedes-Benz Georgia Dome, will open later this year.
Over time, the shows have grown from the original field of 8 trucks. The Road to Monster Jam World Finals® has always included a stop in Atlanta.
Grave Digger® has been a featured attraction in every show, but several of the trucks on hand this weekend have made multiple stops in the past. Atlanta fans have seen 115 different truck names trying for a prestigious championship. On three occasions, a new truck was unveiled with Superman, Iron Man and Junkyard Dog making their respective Monster Jam debuts at the Georgia Dome.
The highlights are numerous. The Georgia Dome was the scene of Monster Jam’s only live television broadcast on January 9, 2010. The 65,000 fans on hand and a nationwide TV audience saw Tom Meents in Max-DTM double down by winning Racing and Freestyle. The following year, Grave Digger® and Dennis Anderson came to Atlanta with an unprecedented win streak of nine consecutive stadium Racing championships. The streak ended at the hands of Frank Krmel in the Atlanta championship round in a photo finish.
The 2017 field will include drivers who have seen success in the Georgia Dome. Returning for this year are 2016 Atlanta racing winner Bounty Hunter (Jim Creten) and Adam Anderson (Grave Digger), who has won two Atlanta Freestyle championships, 2007 and 2016.
In addition to being the final event in the Georgia Dome, the weekend doubleheader marks the final contests of the 2017 FS1 West Series. The Series Champion, to be crowned at the conclusion of the Sunday afternoon event, will receive an automatic bid to Monster Jam World Finals XVIII March 23-25 in Las Vegas, NV.
