EVENT NOTES

After coming up just short in the afternoon’s event, Matt Cody’s emotional day culminated with his first Overall Event Championship in nearly three years. Just as he did during the day, Matt led Blue Thunder to the Racing win. But after that, he was hit with three disappointing finishes in a row before winning the Speedster Obstacle Course (also for the second time of the day). Heading into Freestyle, Blue Thunder enjoyed a narrow two point lead in the standings. That’s when Matt Cody made history, capping his run with his first career backflip in near perfect fashion. Although he only finished in second place in Freestyle, just behind Soldier Fortune, he did enough to earn 37 points and the Overall Event Championship trophy, which he dedicated to the memory of his best friend, fellow Monster Jam truck driver Mike Thompson. Over the course of the two events, Blue Thunder won 5 competitions and compiled 73 of 96 possible points. No matter what happens over the course of Matt Cody’s career, Saturday August 24th in Tampa will be one of the most memorable for this extremely talented driver.

EVENT NOTES

Saturday afternoon at the home of the Tampa Bay Lightning was filled with electricity, emotion and excitement. Things opened with a Blue Thunder Timed Racing victory, followed by an ATV Racing win by reigning ATV World Champion Blake Granger. Up next, Tristan England took the 2-Wheel Skills Challenge. After the intermission, Matt Cody of Blue Thunder got back to his winning ways with back-to-back victories in impressive fashion. First, Matt was able to get a near cyclone working while having his steering wheel detached to earn the Donut win. Then, as he has done so often this year — including at World Finals — he won the Speedster Obstacle Course. Headed into Freestyle, it looked like Matt Cody would be the Overall Event Champion. However, due to some truck issues, he was unable to make it very deep into his run. His 7th place finish, coupled with Max-D’s 2nd place finish was enough to break the tie and allow Blake Granger the opportunity to steal the Overall Event Championship. It’s also worth noting that en route to his Freestyle win, Tristan England of EarthShaker landed his first career backflip and the first backflip ever at the Amalie Arena.
