Barcelona knows championships and expects nothing but the best. The crowd at Estadi Olimpic de Montjuic, the scene of the 1992 Olympic Games, had a chance to see quality entertainment with 10 Monster Jam trucks and specialty vehicles. The excitement kept building up to a thunderous finish with 2015 Young Guns champion Coty Saucier now adding an international win to his record.
Over 10,000 fans started their experience by visiting the Pit Party on the stadium floor. With perfect weather, it was a great family activity with many smiling faces enjoying all of the activities. In mere minutes after the conclusion of the party, the action started again with a special freestyle motocross exhibition. Four riders pumped up the crowd with some great tricks as the fans continued filling the stands for the 8 p.m. show.
The noise built as the 10 trucks hustled around the stadium floor and moved into position for the first competition. The event featured 11 opportunities for athletes to score points toward their championship hopes. Some elements carried as few as ½ point, but freestyle carried the maximum value of two points.
First up was wheelie action, which carried one point. Monster Mutt Rottweiler locked on with a 28, which was equaled by Monster Energy. The tiebreaker went to Monster Energy with the higher dropped lower score. That came in handy when El Toro Loco also scored a 28, but Monster Energy retained the lead. The score stood until El Diablo put the popular truck straight up to earn the first point of the night.
Next up was Monster Jam qualifying with Grave Digger first on the track to set a qualifying mark of 19.750. Monster Energy was close to bypassing the time, setting a 19.840. No one else could get close to the time, so Grave Digger logged ½ point for the best time. NEA and El Diablo, who did not qualify, were eliminated from racing competition.
In round one, Grave Digger used a fast lap to sideline El Toro Loco. Mohawk Warrior got the best of Scooby Doo, Max-D took out Monster Mutt Rottweiler and Monster Energy prevailed over Blue Thunder. Semi-final competition saw Grave Digger dispatch Mohawk Warrior and Max-D upset Monster Energy. This set up a rematch of last week’s Madrid racing final, giving Max-D a chance for revenge. It became a missed opportunity as Grave Digger came across the line to capture his second racing win on the tour and add to the night’s point lead.
The athletes parked their Monster Jam trucks in favor of the ATV machines for two heats and a main. Monster Mutt Rottweiler was best in class of the first field to claim the four-lap heat. Scooby Doo came away with a close win in the second heat. The drivers all gathered for the main event, which was won by George Balhan in Mohawk Warrior. Five different drivers had now scored in the competition.
Donuts were on the menu after a brief intermission. Blue Thunder became the early leader, but El Diablo returned to competition, thanks to the work of his crew. He rewarded their efforts by launching into a series of donuts that lasted well over 90 seconds and brought the crowd to its collective feet. When the twirling stopped, the score was a strong 38 and looked unbeatable. El Toro Loco had other ideas and the donuts were fast and furious as El Toro Loco fans were cheering loudly. The donuts ended and El Toro Loco had a 38 as well. A check of the tiebreaking scores gave the lead to El Toro Loco, who had to wait until two trucks assaulted the floor. The efforts were good, but not good enough with the win going to El Toro Loco.
The drivers returned to their pit areas and slipped in behind the wheel of their speedsters. This four-lap competition got a little testy. Mohawk Warrior and Blue Thunder made contact, which created a red flag to right the Warrior, who expressed his displeasure with a bumper kiss before the restart. El Diablo grabbed the lead in one of the preliminaries, only to clip a hill and roll over. Blue Thunder took the first heat with Grave Digger topping the field in the second heat. A Grave Digger win in the main would have clinched at least a tie in the overall competition, but some misfortune left Grave Digger out of the competition early. The main was a win for Blue Thunder, who moved into second in points.
The final competition was freestyle and the action defied description. The athletes left nothing in the pit area as each was trying to outdo the other and generally successful in their efforts. Misfortune hit Monster Mutt Rottweiler before finishing the full run, opening the door for NEA who went into bonus time and grabbed the lead with a 32, Blue Thunder nipped at the mark, falling a point short. Monster Energy became the new leader with a 35. Max-D rolled with 48 seconds to go to claim a 23 and Scooby Doo had an early ending as well. El Toro Loco broke a wheel in a tremendous save, but could only manage to end up a point short at 34. Mohawk Warrior (33) and El Diablo added matching 33s to the mix, leaving only Grave Digger with the chance to claim the freestyle win. He hit the floor with determination, but failed to entice a score higher than a 34, giving Monster Energy the freestyle win.
When the tally was added for the night’s points, Monster Energy and Grave Digger each stood atop with two. The tiebreaker went to Monster Energy, who earned the special Copa de Barcelona. Eight of the 10 competitors scored points in Barcelona competition, indicating the intensity of the action and the determination of the athletes.
