Monster Jam Week 1 Recap

Authored by Larry Jewett on January 8, 2019

The 2019 Monster Jam season kicked off in three locations across the country, marking the first step in a journey that will see seven Champions crowned at Monster World Finals XX competition in Orlando, Florida, on May 10-11.

For the first time, The World Finals will offer championships in ATV and Speedster disciplines, opening the door for top athletes in Triple Threat Series™ competition. The message has resounded loud and clear as the athletes have already stepped up their weekly performance.

Three shows at the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, provided the backdrop for the start of the tour. Tyler Menninga (Grave Digger®) claimed all three event championships in the defense of his 2018 Triple Threat Series championship. Menninga also swept Racing, 2-Wheel Skills, Speedster Obstacle Course and Freestyle to build up a 35-point lead over Colton Eichelberger (Max-D™). For his part, Eichelberger was a two-time winner in ATV Racing. Grave Digger could not claim a Donut championship as Bari Musawwir (Zombie™) scored two of them while Myranda Cozad (Scooby-Doo) captured the finale on Sunday.

Parity can describe the Triple Threat Series Central as seven of the eight athletes were able to secure at least one victory. The tight points race sees Kayla Blood (Soldier Fortune™) in the early lead, but fewer than 10 points separate the top three positions. Blood scored two Freestyle wins and a pair of 2-Wheel Skills crowns to highlight a weekend that also included an event championship. In his first Monster Jam competition, Justin Hicks (Pirate’s Curse™) swept ATV racing. Ami Houde (Zombie) and Mark List (El Toro Loco®) got their first event championships out of the way with weekend wins.

Tristan England (EarthShaker®) holds the early lead on the Road to the Monster Jam World Finals for Triple Threat Series East. In a return appearance in Birmingham, England took home a pair of racing wins and two 2-Wheel Skills titles en route to an event championship. England has no breathing room as Blake Granger (Max-D) dominated ATV Racing and closed the gap with a Sunday event win that showed dominance. Krysten Anderson (Grave Digger®) started the winning on Saturday with Racing and Freestyle wins leading to an event championship. Kristen Hope (Monster Mutt™ Dalmatian) won her first Monster Jam competition by scoring the Saturday afternoon Donut title.
