What are some of your interests/hobbies/favorite pastimes?
Kelvin Ramer: Spending time with family. I also enjoy the challenges that running a heavy duty towing company brings.
Do you have any ‘pre-show’ rituals you run through?
Kelvin Ramer: I have a checklist of things to do to the Monster Jam truck before each show, including tightening bolts and nuts, inspecting things, and checking tire pressure. I also walk the track and check out the obstacles and jumps. Just before the show, I take a few minutes to myself to mentally prepare. Once I’m in the Monster Jam truck, I take the time to tighten each of my seat belts evenly, up until I can barely breathe. I get my helmet and Hans device on securely and the belts tightened at least two of three Monster Jam trucks before it is my turn to go.
What’s something a lot of people don’t know about you?
Kelvin Ramer: I enjoy volunteering at our kids’ school.
What is your favorite memory on or off the race track?
Kelvin Ramer: Getting a Hot Wheels made of Time Fly’s, and finding it in a store was a surreal moment. We are honored to have had our Monster Jam truck made into a Hot Wheels.
What is your most prized possession?
Kelvin Ramer: I really enjoy spending time with our cat Snowball, and Missy, our Newfoundland dog.
Life on the Road with Monster Jam
What is the best and worst thing about being on the road every weekend with Monster Jam?
Kelvin Ramer: I enjoy the feeling of being with the Monster Jam family. The worst thing is being by myself after Rosalee goes back to school and it’s quiet.
While on the road, what is your favorite thing to do during your free time?
Kelvin Ramer: When I’m not out playing in my Monster Jam truck, I am out playing with my other toys. Our family company, Auto Care Towing, specializes in heavy recovery and commercial truck towing, which offers me exciting new challenges daily. We push our 80-ton rotating crane to its limits, and take our custom 4-wheel drive wrecker out to the edge of civilization in order to recover some of the most interesting and heavy duty equipment out there. I also love to spend time with my family and enjoy my Ford Raptor and 1997 Dodge Viper GTS.
How do you keep fit?
Kelvin Ramer: I enjoy walking.
What item(s) can you not live without while traveling on the road with Monster Jam?
Kelvin Ramer: Cell phone.
What is your favorite city to travel to? Why?
Kelvin Ramer: Anaheim, because it is the first big stadium I ever performed in.
How did you get started competing in Monster Jam?
Kelvin Ramer: The first time my wife and I saw a Monster Jam truck, we thought it looked like a lot of fun! So, in 1984, we started buying parts and building a truck of our own. One of the 4-wheel drive clubs we belonged to was asked to volunteer at several ZZYZX Motorsports events and we met promoter Dave Matthews, and many different Monster Jam truck drivers. I would jump in and help whenever needed with several Monster Jam truck teams, ask questions, and learn as much as I could by observing. I was in a bad accident as a passenger in a service truck in 1987, and we sold most of the Monster Jam truck parts we had gathered to pay for doctors and living expenses. By 1988, we had started building a Monster Jam truck again. In 1991, we started an Auto Transport company, and as the business grew we had to sell the second collection of Monster Jam truck parts to buy more transport trucks. We still kept going to shows and helping different teams. In 1997, we started over for the third time and it was the charm! We saved, bought parts and built the Monster Jam truck in our spare time. The truck took seven years to complete, from 1997 to 2004. In 1998, I started driving a ride truck for Sam Sturges. My first time in a race truck was at a show in Santa Maria, CA in 2001. I continued to drive both the ride truck and the race truck for the Sturges team at several shows a year up until the debut of our truck in Madera, CA. on October 1, 2004. Our first Monster Jam show was Anaheim in January of 2005.
