Morgan Kane returns to Melbourne after driving Dragon at AAMI Park in 2016. The former World Champion will be in his familiar Grave Digger in 2019, looking for his first Racing win and to improve upon a second place in Wheelie competition.
What are some of your interests/hobbies/favorite pastimes?
Morgan Kane: I live a pretty active lifestyle and try to stay busy as possible. When I'm not working at Digger's Dungeon, I spend time with my wife, play and coach soccer, relax on the beach, ride ATVs with my buddies, work on old trucks, and the list goes on! I always have a long list of projects that run through my head, so I stay pretty busy. As long as I am staying active, I am happy!
Who are your role models?
Morgan Kane: Being a role model is a tough one. My dad would have to be the biggest role model in my life. From a young age, he always pushed me to be the best at whatever I'm doing. During my teenage years, we had some awesome times on the soccer field while I worked towards playing in college. Any questions or concerns I come across in life, he is always there to guide me in the right direction.
Do you have any ‘pre-show’ rituals you run through?
Morgan Kane: Before the show, I normally take 5 or 10 minutes to talk to my crew. It really gives me a lot of confidence before the show starts that my Monster Jam truck is ready for whatever I throw at it.
What’s something a lot of people don’t know about you?
Morgan Kane: A lot of people don't know that I am the assistant soccer coach at Currituck County High School. It feels awesome to get out on the field and work with the boys every day. I graduated from CCHS and started varsity all four years. Now, giving back to my community and working to create a great soccer program in our area is my main goal.
What is your favorite memory on or off the race track?
Morgan Kane: My favorite memory would have to come my rookie season in Monster Magic. Racing my best friend, Ryan Anderson in the finals in Minneapolis and getting my first stadium win. It was a moment I’ll never forget.
What is your most prized possession?
Morgan Kane: To be completely honest, my most prized possession would have to be my job. It is truly a dream come true to travel around the world and entertaining so many different cultures. Growing up, I always wanted to visit Spain because of the football (soccer) culture they bring to the table. My dad always told me to find a job that you love to do and you’ll never work a day in your life.
Life on the Road with Monster Jam
What is the best and worst thing about being on the road every weekend with Monster Jam?
Morgan Kane: Well, I love food and traveling to so many different cities gives you the opportunity to expand your taste bud horizons... But that's also the downside to travel, eating out every day and night is not healthy and can sometimes affect sleep, performance on and off the track, and hits the wallet pretty hard. The road always has its ups and downs.
While on the road, what is your favorite thing to do during your free time?
Morgan Kane: On the road there isn't much free time. We work 6 days a week for 4 months straight and the only day off for free time is our travel day, and that takes place in the airports. If we are lucky, we get to the next city and use the first day, which is normally Monday or Tuesday, to go site see.
How do you keep fit?
Morgan Kane: Keeping fit and focused on the road is tough. I don't have the luxury to travel home every week like other drivers and working out in a hotel exercise room just isn't for me. I bring my soccer cleats on the road, so if anyone wants to get a pick up game together in the middle of the week, hit me up on social media! In the past, the crew and I have taken the time to go snowboarding. Great core workout and also loads of fun. Also, nutrition plays a huge role in staying healthy on the road and I try to stay on my eating schedule.
What item(s) can you not live without while traveling on the road with Monster Jam?
Morgan Kane: Three items that I love are my noise cancelling headphones, iPad, and iPhone. Music drives my world and I can’t operate without it.
What is your favorite city to travel to? Why?
Morgan Kane: My favorite city would have to be Barcelona. Everything about that place fascinates me. In 2015, my dad came over for the week for Father’s Day and we had a blast!
How did you get started competing in Monster Jam?
Morgan Kane: My Monster Jam career started in 2011 with Steve Sims. He had an open seat and shows coming up, so I tested at his shop and performed in my first show on Halloween in Louisville, KY at Freedom Hall.
What is your favorite part about competing in Monster Jam?
Morgan Kane: Driving a Monster Jam truck gives you an adrenaline rush that just can't be matched. Pulling out of the pit stall in a packed stadium and smashing the loud pedal to see 70,000 fans on the edge of their seat, it's hard to describe in words. The first time I piloted one of these beasts, my brain was telling me, "Something this big shouldn't go this fast."
How would you describe your driving style?
Morgan Kane: I grew up watching Dennis cover so much ground in 75 seconds and that style just kind of stuck with me. Adam, Ryan, and I are very close and always try to one up each other every run. All our styles are changing with time and the new track designs... but we are always stomping on that loud pedal to be the loudest and fastest Monster Jam truck to hit the floor.
What advice would you give to kids who want to become a Monster Jam driver?
Morgan Kane: My advice to becoming a Monster Jam driver is build character. Monster Jam is so much more than driving a truck and smashing things. Picture yourself with a microphone in a stadium with 65,000 waiting for you to entertain them. They paid hard-earned money to bring their family to watch YOU… What are you doing to do, or say, to get them to smile, laugh, cheer, or jump out of their seats? Being a Monster Jam driver is 30/70. 30% is dedicated to driving, and 70% is showing who you REALLY are. Can you break the silent barrier that a 5-year-old puts up when he walks up to you in the Pit Party? Can you make the Monster Jam fans feel comfortable at our shows and keep them coming back every year for more? THAT is what being a Monster Jam driver is all about.
What is your greatest memory as a Monster Jam driver?
Morgan Kane: My favorite memory is winning the Monster Jam World Finals XVII racing championship. Total team effort from the Grave Digger team. The truck was so hot going into the finals versus Todd LeDuc and we had to use a jump box on 24v to get it to start. GD25 was on a rail that night.
Who in Monster Jam do you look up to for inspiration?
Morgan Kane: In Monster Jam, all the veterans have my respect. The guys that build this sport to what it is today inspire me. They paved the road with a couple of trucks built from junkyard parts and made it possible for us to continue their legacy for the future fans.
Do you have any nicknames?
Morgan Kane: I had a nickname that stuck in high school, Korgan Mane. The first letters in my names switched around. My friends at home still call me that and it became all my social media handles. @korganmane
