Life on the Road with Monster Jam
What is the best and worst thing about being on the road every weekend with Monster Jam?
BJ Johnson: The best thing about being on the road is seeing all of the new cities and meeting all of the great fans. You get to visit a lot of cities and countries that most people never get to see. The worst part is being away from your family all of the time. You miss a lot of birthdays and family get-togethers while on the road.
While on the road, what is your favorite thing to do during your free time?
BJ Johnson: I love going to amusement parks and sightseeing.
How do you keep fit?
BJ Johnson: Working on the trucks during the week keeps me very active. Nothing on the trucks is light, so it’s like weightlifting every day.
What item(s) can you not live without while traveling on the road with Monster Jam?
BJ Johnson: My iPod.
What is your favorite city to travel to? Why?
BJ Johnson: Anaheim, CA. My oldest daughter and parents are able to come to the show to watch and, in our down time, we are able to go to amusement parks.
How did you get started competing in Monster Jam?
BJ Johnson: I drove for independent teams for several years and contacted a man by the name of Mike Wales. He said that I could come work for the company, but they didn’t have an open seat at the time. So in 2013 I was Candice Jolly’s (Monster Mutt Dalmatian) Crew Chief for the first year. When Monster Jam decided to get a second Mohawk Warrior truck, I was offered a seat to drive.
What is your favorite part about competing in Monster Jam?
BJ Johnson: Every day is a new adventure. There is always something new and different to do.
How would you describe your driving style?
BJ Johnson: I am more of a technical driver but drive on the ragged edge. I like to hit things crossed up and look out of control, while being in complete control at all times.
What advice would you give to kids who want to become a Monster Jam driver?
BJ Johnson: Stay in school. Take as many mechanic classes as you can and tinker on your daily drives. The more you can learn and know about the trucks, the better of a driver you will be.
What is your greatest memory as a Monster Jam driver?
BJ Johnson: Any time I can beat any of the drivers that I watched on TV growing up.
