Weekend Race Recap
Thursday 7:30
Rain is always the story here in Bangor Maine when Monster Jam comes to town, but tonight the rain stayed away. It rained the first two days the track crew was here to set the track for four shows. The rain stopped this morning and never showed up again and hopefully for the rest of the weekend. Although it was seassonaly cool at a steady 45 degrees the Family night crowd was huge and they all rooted for their favorite Monster Truck.
Grave Digger was obviously one of the favorites and stole the show with three victories in all. Digger took the wheelie contest with a high score of 17, also the racing finals win over a very strong Back Draft and the final event freestyle with a score of 26. Jeremy Slifko was second best tonight and very impressive with second place in wheelies with a 15 and made it to the finals in racing and another second in freestyle with a tie with Eradicator. Here are the results of the first show.
Wheelies Freestyle
Grave Digger 17 26
Back Draft 15 20
Eradicator 14 20
Instigator 12 19
Pure Adrenaline 11 19
Racing Round one: Grave Digger Bye run, Back Draft def. Pure Adrenaline, Eradicator def. Instigator.
Racing Round semi finals: Grave Digger def. Instigator (fast looser) Back Draft def. Eradicator.
Racing Finals Grave Digger def. Back Draft.
Street Wwarriors winner went to Matt Randell and the Quad wars final match went to the home team of Maine with a thrilling last lap pass for the win over team New York.
Friday 7:30
One Hour after I put in my report last night and talked about how the rain had let up, it started raining again and never stopped until one hour before tonight show. I have never seen it rain so much but when the show is to start it stops. The forcast for tomorrow looks the same so hopefully it won't rain during tomorrows two shows.
Enough about the rain! Grave Digger again swept the field by winning the first contest of the night. Digger scored a 20 in wheelies to take the win followed by Pure Adrenaline who scored a 18. Instigator was third with a 16 followed up by Eradicator with a 13 and Back Draft with a 12. The low scores came because of the sloppy track conditions from all of the rain but racing was great.
Grave Digger got the bye run from winning the wheelie contest and took advantage with lane choice and beat the field of trucks. Digger took a win in the semi finals over fast looser Back Draft and then the finals win over Pure Adrenaline. Pure Adrenaline made it to the finals with wins over Back Draft in round one and Instigator in the semi finals. Instigator made it to the semi finals with a win over Eradicator.
Freestyle was next and all trucks were gunning for the Black and Green Wrecking Machine, but in the end Grave Digger prevailed with some sick air and a score of 25. Lionel Easeler stepped it up and took second with a score of 20 followed by Pure Adrenaline with a 19. The scores were close all night as Back Draft was only short of third place by one point and a score of 18 as Eradicator rounded out the field with a 12.
Street Warriors winner was Larry Lanney with his 1992 GMC called the Iron man with a winning time of 28.15 secs. over last nights winner Matt Randall who lost with a time of 28.16 secs. Team New York took the main event win over the home crowd team Team Maine.
Saturday 2:00
Wow! Sunshine is a beautiful thing here in Maine. For the first time since we got here on Wednesday the sun came out for a great afternoon of Monster Jam. Grave Digger again swept the competition by winning all three contests but it was much harder as the track started to dry out. The crowd thought that Instigator and Eradicator should of won the wheelie contest as they both had some great wheelies compared to the Black and Green Wrecking machine. Racing was also closer than it had been the past two nights.
Grave Digger won the wheelies with a score of 24 as Eradicator and Instigator tied for second with scores of 21. Back Draft was next with a 20 followed up by Pure Adrenaline with a 19.
Racing and freestyle were very close as Grave Digger made it to the finals by getting the first round bye and defeating fast looser Back Draft in the semi finals. In the finals Digger beat Pure Adrenaline by less than a tire length to take his third racing victory. Pure Adrenaline made it to the finals with wins over Eradicator in round one and Instigator in the semi finals. Instigator also had a win in round one with a victory over Back Draft.
Four trucks made it to the freestyle competition as Eradicator had a broken shock and was unable to compete. The first three trucks out all had prblems as none of then finished the full 90 second runs. Pure Adrenaline was the first to go and had a solid run started until he broke the rear steering line which scored him a 21. Back Draft was next and had some huge air off of all the car stacks but blew out the left rear tire which ended his run with a score of 20. Instigators problems started when he hit the high van stack and broke the right rear wheel of giving him a score of 21 and the wide open door for Grave Digger. Randy Brown drove Digger in style and wowed the crowd and the judges for another win and a score of 29.
The sold out standing room only crowd also got to enjoy the Street Warriors which was won again by Matt Randall in his 1991 Ford Explorer. Team New York dominated the first two heat events but Team Maine battled back in the end to take the main heat. See you later tonight for the last of four shows.
Saturday 7:30
It happened again one hour after my last recap and talking about the rain holding off a storm brewed up and drenched the track. It did stop just in time to open the gates for another sold out crowd. The fans were anxious for the start of the competition wanting Grave Digger to win it all. This time it would not happen. Pure Adrenaline finally knocked off Grave Digger in the racing finals with some very close action all night. Eradicator also came close to knocking Grave Digger out of freestyle with a wicked save and a super fast cyclone with a blown tire in freestyle.
It is amazing that the fans pour out to this little speedway for four shows and pack it with enthusiasm. The racing in each event was exciting and the freestyle was awesome all week long. I met some fans this weekend that came to all four shows including a guy named Jimmy who has been to one of my shows in Pennsylvania. He traveled just over seven hours to get here and is from New York and plans on going to West Lebanon in a couple of weeks. It goes to show how far Monster Jam has come and the best fans in Motor sports is Monster Jam fans!
Here are the results and racing from tonight.
