Weekend Race Recap

Friday 7:30 p.m. - Grave Digger and Maximum Destruction continued the renewal of their rivalry in Florida with Randy Brown and Tom Meents splitting the victories, Brown driving Grave Digger to a photo finish win over Maximum Destruction in the Championship Race, while it was Meents taking Maximum Destruction to the winner's circle in freestyle in front of a capacity crowd Friday night at Ocala Speedway.

Making his first ever appearance at the popular Summer Heat annual event in Ocala Meents opened the show by winning the wheelie contest, setting the table for a great racing bracket that gave the loud crowd the final round that most of them were hoping for, Grave Digger vs. Maximum Destruction. As they did each time they met last weekend in Naples, Brown and Meents gave the fans another sensational Championship Race with Brown coming from behind on his final run to the finish line for a narrow Grave Digger win.

The Florida fans were then treated to a tremendous freestyle competition with every competitor on his game, but in the end in again came down to a Grave Digger - Maximum Destruction battle. Brown had a series of amazing leaps on the spacious dirt track course as Grave Digger took the lead away from popular Floridian Scott Hartsock and Gunslinger, but Meents was able to nail his own massive leaps, plus Meents took advantage of the asphalt intersection still remaining from the days before the speedway was converted to a dirt track. It was on that asphlat that Meents tore into a breathtaking round of cyclone donuts, lifting the truck off the ground several times during the high speed revolutions. A huge save near the end of the run had the crowd back on its feet before the run ended with Maximum Destruction on its roof and Meents was scored a one point winner over Brown to start the four event weekend.

Saturday 2:00 p.m. - Tom Meents thrilled another huge crowd at Ocala Speedway Saturday afternoon as he drove Maximum Destruction to the sweep of all three Monster Jam Summer Heat competitions at the central Florida dirt track.

The eight time World Champion got the matinee event off to a huge start with a pair of big sky wheelies that wrapped up with Meents finishing the contest running the truck bicycle style on the side of the wheels almost the length of the track to earn Maximum Destruction the wheelie contest victory.

In the racing bracket Meents squared off with Randy Brown and Grave Digger, who he lost to in Friday night's Championship Race, this time in the semifinal round and Max-D got revenge for the Friday night loss as Meents won the race to roll back into the finale. His opponent in the race bracket's final round was Ricky Ownley who had driven Mopar Magic to victory over popular home state superstar Scott Hartsock and Gunslinger in the other semifinal. The Championship Race was yet another close one on the long oval track with Maximum Destruction taking a one length victory over Mopar Magic.

Freestyle was again outstanding start to finish, with the fans again treated to another Max-D-Digger battle. Brown again set the bar high with his big air, high energy Grave Diggerperformance, and again Meents was up to the task roaring Maximum Destruction all over Ocala Speedway, then he used a dizzying round of cyclones to compliment his big leaps and the judges scored Meents with three perfect scores of 10, his total of 30 edging Grave Digger by a single point

Saturday 7:30 p.m. - Rising to the occasion against an all-star line-up that included Maximum Destruction and Grave Digger it was Steve Sims who stole the show in Stone Crusher, winning both the freestyle competition and wheelie contest, while Randy Brown drove Grave Digger to the win in the racing bracket in front of an excited, standing room only crowd of Monster Jam fans at Ocala Speedway.

With the weekend being dominated through the first two events of the weekend in central Florida by the Grave Digger vs. Maximum Destruction rivalry Sims showed he was there to upset the pecking order right off the bat when Stone Crusher won the wheelie contest, and backed up that performance with a phenomenal high flying freestyle run. Sims' used a high energy attack full of great momentum, tons of combos, and massive air to out point Max-D and Digger by one point for the Stone Crusher freestyle victory.

Earlier in the racing competition Maximum Destruction had to drop out of the bracket with mechanical problems so Tom Meents and his team thrashed on the truck to get ready for freestyle. It was Brown and Grave Digger taking that triumph, outrunning Florida native Lionel Easler and Instigator in the Championship Race.

OCALA SUNDAY RECAP

RACING WINNER – GUNSLINGER

FREESTYLE WINNER – GRAVE DIGGER

Sunday 2:00 p.m. – In a weekend where so much hype and fan attention was focused on another chapter in the Team Grave Digger vs. Maximum Destruction rivalry it was some of the other competitors in the all-star line-up that broke through with their first victories of the weekend, Ricky Ownley wowing the crowd to win the wheelie contest in Mopar Magic and home state hero Scott Hartsock winning racing in Gunslinger Sunday afternoon at Ocala Speedway. Then the weekend concluded in exciting fashion with incredible freestyles, highlighted by Randy Brown’s run in Grave Digger and Tom Meents’ wild performance in Maximum Destruction.

Opening up the fourth event of the Ocala weekend Ownley came out first for the wheelie contest, and his second hit gave fans one of the weekend’s biggest Wow moments. On his second wheelie Ownley sailed high into the air and landed Mopar Magic on its back wheels, the front wheels never touching the ground. From there Ownley hammered the throttle and rode the unique wheelie the length of the front stretch before flipping the truck when the front end finally came down. Even though the fan judges scored the contest a three way tie, the Monster Jam tie-breaking official scored the win for Mopar Magic.

The racing bracket was full of great racing and surprising upsets, beginning in the first round when Steve Sims continued his fantastic weekend by driving Stone Crusher to victory over Grave Digger. Stone Crusher then was knocked off in the semifinals by fastest first round loser Hartsock in Gunslinger, taking the Bushnell, FL, resident into the Championship Race at the track some 40 miles from his home. In the other semifinal the sport’s only eight time World Champion, Meents, drove Max-D to victory over Mopar Magic. The finale turned out to be one of the best races of the weekend, and in a rematch of the two drivers who competed in the very first World Championship race at World Finals 1, a race won by Meents in his Goldberg truck, this time it was Hartsock who found a little extra heading toward the finish line to inch out a narrow, popular win for Gunslinger.

The final freestyle of the weekend was incredible with Sims again putting a big score on the board with his high air assault in Stone Crusher, but unlike Saturday night when Sims won freestyle, this time the headliners were able to edge past his score. First it was Grave Digger that had the crowd standing and cheering for his ragged edge run, then Meents too earned a standing ovation with another set of unbelievable, gyroscopic cyclones. Both drivers were scored a 30 from the judges, with the tie-breaker judges giving the nod to Grave Digger, but it was Meents who left the vivid, lasting impression on the crowd when, after filling the time clock on his run, Meents flew into the air to intentionally land in the pond that is in the race track infield, the show ending with Meents crawling out of his water logged Max-D and the crowd on its feet again in delight.
