Weekend Race Recap

SATURDAY 2 PM-
Racing: Black Stallion
Freestyle: Grave Digger

With the first show of the week today at 2pm, it was our fans at the Built Ford Tough Party in the Pits that kicked off the weekend of Monster Jam here in at the Arena at Harbor Yard. This weekend of shows will rank amongst the very best of the season as we welcomed no less than four drivers that have already qualified for the NGK Monster Jam World Final taking place two weeks from today.

The AAP Monster Jam Wheelie Competition started out strong, and ended even stronger!

U.S Air Force Afterburner: 19
Iron Warrior: 15
Donkey Kong: 16
Black Stallion: 17

Taz: 22
Grave Digger: 22

Afterburner came out and rocked the car stacks on both wheelie attempts. His run was so good that his score would hold up till the final two trucks ran. When Anderson came out and set the bar even higher, it looked like he may run away with the win. That, obviously, was not what Pauken was thinking. When Charlie brought Digger to the stack for his second attempt, he pulled off a near perfect wheel stand "Chuckie" style. The tie score meant that the judges has to implement the tie-breaker, which clearly awarded Digger the win - but, by only a single point.

After drawing numbers to set the bracket, we were set for Built Ford Tough Monster Jam Racing. In Round 1, Kong took out Taz, Afterburner edged past Stallion, and Digger put Warrior back into the pits. The fastest losing time belonged to Stallion, giving Vaters a second chance to get to the finals.

Once in the Semi's, there was no stopping the twenty seven year veteran Mike Vaters. He beat Kong in the first race, and then watched as Afterburner took down Digger in the second. Once in the Finals, Vaters knew that experience would be his edge. In a very close race, it was Stallion that notched yet another racing victory at Monster Jam.

FMX is featured this weekend at Monster Jam. With a wet track surface still trying to dry itself out, the riders felt that, to ensure safety, they should pull back just a bit. But, if we hadn't told you this, you would have never known. Cody Cavanaugh and Tim Boca still pulled out some huge tricks, capped off by an unbelievable "Lazy Boy".

Team NY was simply outclassed by a determined Team Connecticut. Even though the teams split the two early races, it was CT pushing the action right to the checkered flag for the win in the Finals.

We had the perfect track set up for the UTI Monster Jam Freestyle - and when the crew put the van into one of the car stack, we knew that some huge air was going to be a part of the competition.

U.S Air Force Afterburner: 19
Iron Warrior: 16
Donkey Kong: 18
Black Stallion: 15
Taz: 17

Grave Digger: 23

The fast paced, non-stop style of Bradshaw set the U.S. Air Force Afterburner up as the leader early in the competition. Of course all eyes were on the defending Monster Jam World Finals Freestyle Champion. With only two weeks before he goes back to Vegas to defend the title, Adam Anderson is really looking to go huge this weekend His run began in true Taz style, but, ended earlier due to a blown brakes on the front axle. With the door open, Digger knew that it was there for the taking. With his trademark pedal to the metal run, Charlie would lock in his first Freestyle win of the weekend.

SATURDAY 7:30 PM-
Racing: Black Stallion
Freestyle: Grave Digger

The AAP Monster Jam Wheelie Competition brought us the first carnage of the weekend.

U.S Air Force Afterburner: 18
Iron Warrior: 16
Donkey Kong: 17
Black Stallion: 27
Taz: 27

Grave Digger: 30

Mike Vaters began wasted no time in going "all out". In his first attempt, he launched Stallion up and over the entire cars stack, and planted the tailgate into the dirt ramp for the perfect wheel stand. The move ripped the all of the body panels completely off the rear of the truck. Naturally, the crowd was on their feet. Taz came out and, according to the judges, used two wheelies to match the single run by Vaters - minus the destroyed body panels. Digger, though, would top all scores with two near perfect wheel stands of his own.

In Round 1 of Built Ford Tough Monster Jam Racing, Air Force flew past Warrior, Stallion took the finish line against Taz, and Digger beat the Kong, who would come back as the fastest losing truck.

In the Semi's, Digger took out Air Force, and Stallion put itself in a second straight Finals for the weekend by taking Kong back of the competition -- which meant that we had two of the most experienced drivers facing off in tonight's Finals. Not many drivers have more years behind the wheel that Charlie's twenty one. Vaters, however, is one of those drivers - he's got another six years to his credit. Mike used every single one of those extra years to find the right formula to become a two time racing champion here in Bridgeport.

In tonight's FMX, Cody Cavanaugh and Tim Boca again pulled out some huge tricks, including a picture perfect "Heelclicker". With the crowd continuing ask for more, Cody came out for two more encore runs.

Team NY blew away Team Connecticut in the two early heats. Team NY then used the tactic of cutting the track, and taking out the best rider of their opponent to ensure that they took the main as well. Before the Tech Officials could pass a ruling on a possible DQ, the two teams agreed upon a winner-take-all Captain's Challenge. Team CT ended up taking the prize when Team NY's captain flipped his quad trying to take a turn too sharply, and too fast.

With of the great action tonight, the fans were now on their feet anticipating the UTI Monster Jam Freestyle.

U.S Air Force Afterburner: 29
Iron Warrior: 22
Donkey Kong: 26
Black Stallion: 24
Taz: 29

Grave Digger: 30

Air Force came of fast and again put up one of the best performances, setting the pace for the competition. This time, though, the fact that he was just one point short of perfect meant that he would be even tougher to beat. Though Taz wasn't quite able to be top the score, he did put a high flying Freestyle run together to tie it up. Coming into a weekend where 4 of the 6 drivers competing have already qualified for the NGK Spark Plug Monster Jam World Finals, every driver knew that it may take a perfect run, and a perfect score to win in Freestyle. Pauken is one of the very best as doing what it takes to earn that perfect score. His fast paced style again impressed the judges enough for the win, giving Digger his second perfect score of the night.

SUNDAY -
Racing: Donkey Kong
Freestyle: Grave Digger

The AAP Monster Jam Wheelie Competition began the show again today.

U.S Air Force Afterburner: 25
Iron Warrior: 17
Donkey Kong: 23
Black Stallion: 22
Taz: 24
Grave Digger: 29

Afterburner came out once again and set the stage for a high flying competition. The score once again held till the final truck ran. Charlie once again put up two perfect wheel stands that blew the judges away.

In Round 1 of today's Built Ford Tough Monster Jam Racing, Kong took out Digger, Afterburner edged past Taz, and Stallion put his teammate Warrior out of the competition. The fastest losing time belonged to Digger, giving Charlie a second chance to pick up his first racing win of the weekend.

After Digger took down Stallion in the Semis, Pauken set his sights on a rematch with Kong. To make sure that happened, Kong beat Taz in the second Semi Final race. With the two teammates in the Finals, we knew that we had a great match up. It was Kong that got the holeshot, and on the short track, that made the difference.

FMX raised the roof with an incredible, and unexpected ending. Cody Cavanaugh and Tim Boca brought out the biggest tricks like the "Hart Attack", "Cliffhanger", "Lazy Boy", just to name a few. To end the weekend, Cody gave the signal that he wanted to do just one more trick for the fans. No question that the fans went crazy when he pulled off the perfect "Back Flip".

Team NY evened out the early races with a win in the second heat over Team Connecticut. After a Captain's Grudge, it was Team CT that took the clean sweep for the weekend.

Closing down the show for the weekend was the UTI Monster Jam Freestyle.

U.S Air Force Afterburner: 27
Iron Warrior: 19
Donkey Kong: 24
Black Stallion: 21
Taz: 28

Grave Digger: 29

Bradshaw once again put the field of trucks on notice early in the competition. U.S. Air Force Afterburner took on the FMX 13ft tall landing ramp on his way to one of the best scores of the weekend. The defending Monster Jam World Finals Freestyle Champion Adam Anderson came out with a vengeance, knowing that this would be his last run prior to heading out to Vegas to defend his title. His score of 28 was good enough to take the lead, but not quite enough to seal the win. Digger knew that he had a chance to sweep Freestyle for the weekend - and, he took it! As always, it was pedal to the metal for the full :60.
