Over 42,000 crazed Monster Jam fans sold out Edison International Field in Anaheim, Calif, tonight. Big O Tires and Ford Trucks reaped the rewards of a huge crowd watching Blue Thunder taking a Monster Truck racing win and Charlie Pauken in Grave Digger grab the Monster Truck Freestyle trophy.
For the first time in Anahiem, we had "Autocross"" and it was a trip. The crowd loved it. It's a rooling demolition derby. With 2 heats and an 11 car final, they beat and banged each other pretty hard. The class of the field was Jim Attmon in his #58 Chevy Camaro. He lapped half the field in route to his win.
Pro Quads were also on the docket for the night. They put on a great show. With qualifiers in the afternoon and 2 heats, 2 semis and a main. The racing was intense with position changes every lap. the main event was led by heat winner #12 Kieth Little until the last turn , on the last lap. There he hit a lapped rider and got his quad stuck. Kory Ellis was right there to capitalize on Little's misfortune. Dana Creech finshed second with #11 Micheal Walsh in third. The top five were as follows:
1. 53 Kory Ellis / LSR / Murrieta, Ca.
2. 4 Dana Creech / Walsh / Eureka, Ca.
3. 11 Micheal Walsh /Honda / Preston, Ct.
4. 67 Daryl Rath / Polaris / Hutchinson, Mn.
5. 28 Greg Stewart / Leager-Honda / Yuciapa, Ca.
In the Monster racing, it was a Blue Thunder run-a-way. Tony Ferrell mowed down truck after truck on the way to the final. That's where Blue Thunder met Gravedigger and "the race was on". The two trucks were even for the first half of the race and then Blue Thunder hammered the throttle to claim the victory.
In Monster Freestyle, Grave Digger scored a perfect 30. Jurrasic Attack put on a strong second place finish with a 22 point run. Third was Thunderstruck (Paul Jensen) driving. He like his competition, had to work for every point they we scored. It was a very fast track with pleanty of ways to get big air, and that's what the field did.
The crowd roard with approval with the "Freestyle runs". Blue Thunder blew a tranny in the drag race final, and got it fixed in time to make freestyle. His run was cut short due to a broken coupling shaft.
It was a fun night in Anahiem...Larry Naston / USHRA Announcer.
