Weekend Race Recap
Atlanta, GA (January 11, 2003)
Saturday A capacity crowd in the huge Georgia Dome saw an unbelievable set of events in the Monster Truck racing portion of the program, ending with one of the biggest surprises in years when Steve Reynolds drove Ragin Steel home the winner, his first major event victory in USHRA competition.
The night started out with Scott Hartsock in Gunslinger setting the fastest time on the Chicago-style oval course. But this time being fast qualifier was not the best thing to be. That was because three-time reigning World Champion Tom Meents in his new Maximum Destruction truck had a bad qualifying run. Meents almost flipped the truck in time trials and posted the slowest time in qualifying, which matched him with Gunslinger in round one. Meents got his act together in the first round of racing and knocked Gunslinger out of the racing. The second surprise early was Ragin Steel's first round win over Lyle Hancock in the Built Ford Tough Blue Thunder.
Blue Thunder still advanced to the second round as the fastest loser in the five first round races. In other first round action Madusa knocked off Black Stallion, High Roller surprised Bulldozer and Dennis Anderson drover Grave Digger home a winner over Avenger. Coming back as the fastest loser, Blue Thunder then shocked Maximum Destruction in the second round and Meents wasn't that round's fastest loser, eliminating him from racing. Ragin Steel beat Madusa and Grave Digger had an incredible run to beat High Roller. Digger, as several other drivers did on the fast and tough course, drove into the final turn too hard. It appeared he was beaten, but Anderson hammered the throttle, making up a huge deficit to win by inches. High Roller advanced to the semi finals as the fast loser but was eliminated there by Blue Thunder.
Then Reynolds pulled a stunner, beating Grave Digger to advance to the finals. Hancock, like Meents and Anderson earlier, had trouble with the turns while Reynolds stayed smooth and fast to record the win.
The freestyle competition was awesome from start to finish. Mike Vaters came out first and set the bar high beginning with a reverse climb over the bus stack, launching off a freestyle motocross mountain, and finishing by flipping the truck over onto its roof, all in about 45 seconds, half of the allotted time. Other notable performances included Madusa's crash and flip, Jim Kohler's wild ride ending with a rollover in Avenger, and a huge air performance by Scott Hartsock in Gunslinger that had him in the lead heading into the runs by the big two. Meents was first and laid down one of his best ever. The King Of Air proved he is just that with a run full of sick air, momentum, and breathtaking moments.
The final move was the most memorable though. Meents kicked off his final jump side ways with the truck going over onto its left side wheels, Among a shower of sparks Meents actually was doing donuts on the side of the truck trying to save it, finally finishing with a complete 360 and landing on his wheels. Then Anderson brought out the Grave Digger, knowing that Meents had just laid down one of his best ever. With that Anderson not only filled the 90 seconds with constant excitement, but also took one last shot as the clock expired and rolled the truck over in wild fashion. The judges scored Grave Digger and Maximum Destruction each with a 28, tying them for the win.
Other action in the "Superbowl" saw veteran Chris McCoy in the Mac Attack Ford edge 18-year old Adam Armbrust and his Dynomax Ford by inches to win the Pro Stadium Truck Finals. Greg Hartman of New Castle, PA, won the freestyle motocross easily when he capped off his set of jumps with a full 360 back flip that brought the huge crowd to its feet again. And even though Team Philadelphia swept the heat races, it was Team Atlanta coming back to win the Quad Wars main.
