Friday night

Friday 7:00 p.m. – In what was another historic milestone in the continuing worldwide growth of Monster Jam® Carl Van Horn etched his name in the record books as the sport’s first ever champion in the Middle East, powering Grave Digger® to the Double Down trophy at Zayed City Sports Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The debut in a brand new part of the Monster Jam world was greeting enthusiastically first in a packed pit party where thousands of Abu Dhabi fans got up close to the world’s most amazing machines and met some of the biggest superstar drivers on the circuit, then inside the huge stadium where the massive floor and a tremendous track created by the track construction team provided a night full of thrills for the cheering crowd, most of whom were witnessing the phenomenon of Monster Jam live for the first time.

Grave Digger set the tone right off the bat when Van Horn posted the fastest qualifying to take the number one seed in the first Monster Jam racing bracket ever contested in the United Arab Emirates. Van Horn backed up his quick time round after round, and when he eliminated Morgan Kane and Iron Man in the semifinal round Grave Digger was the first to claim a berth in that history making Championship Round race. On the bottom half of the bracket Chad Fortune and Captain America knocked off Damon Bradshaw and Monster Energy to set up the final race of the night. The Championship Round Race was a fitting climax to the hotly contested racing battle and Grave Digger pulled out the narrow win over Captain America. Van Horn celebrated with a mini freestyle after the triumph and thanked the crowd on the microphone for the wonderful turnout and for the warm welcoming he received from so many new Grave Digger fans, and he vowed to do everything he could to win the Double Down.

Van Horn would deliver on that promise but the star studded line-up of challengers he was up against would not make it easy and a sensational freestyle competition ensued that was full of huge air, incredible moves and thrills start to finish. All but one of the Monster Jam trucks to compete in the Abu Dhabi freestyle competition filled both the regulation and bonus clocks to maximize the action and the bar kept getting raised as each competitor did everything they could to take the coveted first ever Middle East freestyle. There were so many highlights throughout but one that received some of the loudest roars from the crowd was Dan Evans and Blue Thunder beautifully leaping the largest obstacle on the track in reverse.

Becky McDonough was having one of the greatest nights of her career in stadium action and her ragged edge performance allowed El Toro Loco to take the lead from Blue Thunder, then a few trucks later in the order of competition Bari Musawwir moved into the hot seat thanks to his crowd pleasing run in Spider-man. Bari kept the hot seat occupied most of the rest of the night, but the 2nd to last Monster Jam truck in the line-up was Grave Digger, and Van Horn pursued the Double Down with reckless abandon, huge air and amazing saves kept the crowd on its feet as CVH truly introduced Abu Dhabi to what a Grave Digger freestyle was all about. Tom Meents and Max-D provided the roaring fans with an incredible high flying run that continued long after all the scores were in, Meents celebrating Max-D’s 10th Anniversary by showing the United Arab Emirates what a Decade of Maximum Destruction really means. Max-D’s freestyle pushed Digger, but Grave Digger outscored Max-D by 2 points on the judge’s scorecards to add the first Middle East freestyle championship to the earlier won racing event, Grave Digger the Double Down winner at the first ever Monster Jam in Abu Dhabi.
