Friday 7:30 p.m.

The return of the Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam at the River Center brought a good crowd inside for a Friday night of action that saw three different winners through the night.
The action opened with wheelie competition setting the stage for the night’s activity. The field of six Monster Jam trucks would use the event to showcase their talents and get the night started on the right foot. Andy Hoffman put his Nitemare truck vertical in the early stages to earn a solid 23. The mark proved to be one of the toughest challenges that no one could eclipse. After two wins in wheelie competition last weekend in Pensacola, Nitemare kept the string alive with a Louisiana victory.
The drivers set out for their next conquest, which was side-by-side racing. Earlier, each driver had aligned with a seating section for the Jack in the Box giveaway that saw winning fans picking up free food items. With the support of their cheering sections, the drivers were given additional incentive to perform. Iron Man opened the competition by setting down Nitemare. Fatal Attraction was first across the line in a matchup against War Wizard. The final race saw Monster Mutt Rottweiler fly past Gunslinger. War Wizard got the fast loser provisional and returned for semi-final action. Iron Man prevailed over War Wizard while Monster Mutt Rottweiler came out victorious over Fatal Attraction. The UTI championship came down to Monster Mutt Rottweiler and Iron Man. The Young Guns hopeful Morgan Kane got the hole shot to take Iron Man to a racing win.
With Fatal Attraction sidelined with transmission issues, a field of five trucks set out for donut action after a brief intermission. Nitemare opened with a solid 16, which fell to Iron Man’s 23. Gunslinger took it one point better to grab the lead. Monster Mutt Rottweiler made it an obvious choice by putting more than a dozen revolutions before the run ended in a bang. The crew went to work immediately after the truck was hauled off the floor and it would not return for Service is Our Best Part freestyle.
Fatal Attraction was able to put together a 60 second run to start the freestyle action, scoring a 15 to open the action. The score stood until Nitemare put up a performance that earned a 22. That mark would not be topped until Morgan Kane stepped up in his attempt to double down. His 24 prevailed, giving him his third double down win of 2013, matching the efforts in North Charleston and Memphis.
The show also featured high flying BMX tricksters and the Fearless Flores Family in the Sphere of Fear. Two more shows await the Baton Rouge crowd, who will also enjoy an afternoon pit party.

Saturday 2 p.m.

The Monster Jam matinee for Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge gave a lot of new fans something to talk about for hours on end. Once again, parity was obvious as three drivers claimed wins.
The attrition of Friday night was nowhere to be found as the hard work of the crews was obvious. Fatal Attraction driver Jeff Murphy and crew worked into the wee hours of the morning to repair a transmission issue. A detonated supercharger kept the crew of Monster Mutt Rottweiler, with the help of others, going through the night. When the Saturday morning Monster Jam Party in the Pits was opened, these trucks were ready, along with all of their competitors
Andy Hoffman returned to victory in the wheelie competition as Nitemare proved to be the class of the field in getting vertical. Gunslinger came very close to claiming his first win of the weekend, ending up a single point back with those two trucks the only entries breaking 20 in the competition.
The Monster Jam racing opened with Monster Mutt Rottweiler defeating War Wizard. The remaining races saw Fatal Attraction nip Nitemare while Iron Man launched to the finish ahead of Gunslinger. The effort of Gunslinger earned the fast loser provisional for a pass to the semi-finals. With four trucks moving on, Monster Mutt Rottweiler and Gunslinger squared off in the first match-up, which proved to be the closest race of the day. A review found Monster Mutt Rottweiler moving on. Fatal Attraction charged hard, but could not come away with the victory, allowing Iron Man to make his second consecutive UTI Championship round.
The finals were actually a re-match of the Friday night affair, but this time, the result was different. Monster Mutt Rottweiler claimed the win to set the stage for a possible double down effort.
The donut action was understandably frantic as drivers were seeking another chance to claim a championship plaque. When the smoke cleared, the winner was War Wizard, whose performance came in front of sponsor representatives on hind for the show. Celebrating 10 years of War Wizard, driver Randy Moore, who spent most of the 2013 tour in stadiums, picked up the element win to add to his many accomplishments.
The final element of competition was Service is Our Best Part freestyle and all six trucks were readied for competition. Nitemare grabbed the early lead with an 18 as War Wizard came charging out. Within 10 seconds of the run, the truck had flopped onto its side, ending the run. The crew assessed damage to the wheel and further competition on the weekend hung in jeopardy. When freestyle continued, Gunslinger came in a point short with Iron Man jumping to the top. It wasn’t over as Monster Mutt Rottweiler really wanted that first double down victory of the year and it happened with a solid run, opening with a high jump over the van stack.
Speaking of high flying, top BMX tricksters performed their stunts to an encouraging crowd. The Fearless Flores Family and their performance in the Sphere of Fear delighted young and old.

Saturday 7:30 p.m.

The finale of the 2013 Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam visit to Baton Rouge provided some breath-taking moments as the fans roared their approval throughout the course of the night.
Wheelie action saw Nitemare make a bid for a clean sweep of the competition, once again scoring higher than 20 in the earlier competition. This time, the lead wouldn’t stand as a tail-dragging effort by Monster Mutt Rottweiler brought the score to a 26 and a new winner was crowned in wheelies.
The racing activity provided even more close finishes that required the judges to watch the line closely. In round one, Nitemare dropped Iron Man, Monster Mutt Rottweiler took care of War Wizard and Gunslinger slipped by Fatal Attraction. Iron Man received the fast loser provision for having the best time in a non-winning effort. The provisional turned out to be fortuitous as Iron Man earned a rematch against Nitemare. This time, Iron Man got the hole shot that led to victory. Monster Mutt Rottweiler advanced to the finals with a win over Gunslinger. The stage was set for the UTI championship round, pitting the same trucks from the two previous shows. Each had scored a victory and this would actually determine the champion for the entire weekend. It was close, but it was Iron Man as driver Morgan Kane carried those victories to his upcoming Young Guns competition in the Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam World Finals presented by NGK Spark Plugs.
For donut action, the winning effort was epic as Monster Mutt Rottweiler did a great imitation of the Energizer Bunny as driver Rod Schmidt just kept going and going and going, spurred by the increasing crowd noise. The reward was a perfect 30.
Service is Our Best Part Freestyle brought a new winner for the weekend. Gunslinger set the pace with a score of 23 and had to watch as previous winners Iron Man and Monster Mutt Rottweiler attacked. Iron Man was trying to double down and came up a point short. Monster Mutt Rottweiler would end the run right at the :60 mark and finish two points back.
Four riders flew across the BMX freestyle ramp with top tricks including backflips. The Fearless Flores Family showed their skills in the 14-foot steel globe after intermission.
