Friday Night

Grave Digger buried the competition tonight at Freedom Hall with a clean sweep of all competitions. While Scooby Doo and Crushstation exhibited excellent performances, they were well short of what the black and green wrecking machine displayed at the Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam.

Grave Digger’s win in the Monster Jam Wheelie Competition came with a big wow as driver Carl Van Horn launched the machine in the air, cleared the cars and stuck the rear of the truck on the landing ramp before gently landing rubber side down to take the win. It was on to Monster Jam Racing for the Monster Jam trucks were Trey Meyers in Iron Warrior marched through the bracket to face Grave Digger. Iron Warrior was well tuned after coming off of a stadium show Minneapolis where the Monster Jam Trucks raced on a Chicago style track just slightly bigger than the one here at Freedom Hall. But as the trucks entered turn one, Grave Digger slid right through while Iron Warrior slipped up a bit which made the difference in the race.

The fans were pumped and ready for Advance Auto Parts Service is Our Best Part Freestyle after great wheelies, racing and a little intergalactic face off from the robots Galactron and Reptar. Incinerator was the first to hit the jammer stack in the middle of the floor to take command of the lead but it was short lived as Nicole Johnson in Scooby Doo got some great air as she barked the dog around the course. Crushstation had a promising run going until a problem occurred with the steering on the truck. Grave Digger was the last truck in competition and it was clear that CVH wanted to make it a clean sweep for the night. Lots of big air, quick turns and amazing wheelies ensued as Grave Digger came close to a perfect score earning a 27 from the judges and taking the Double Down for Friday

Saturday Night

It was another clean sweep for Grave Digger and Carl Van Horn in legendary Freedom Hall during the Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam.

Grave Digger had to come out hard for the Monster Jam Wheelie competition after Crushstation set the score to beat at 22 with some high flying wheelies that cleared both of the crush car stacks. So after making the approach, Van Horn mashed the throttle and slightly pogoed upon landing and the track landed hard on the front right tire. The second hit was just as impressive but Van Horn knew the machine was not in pristine condition and nosed into his pit stall. Immediately crew chief Rick Steffens went to work on the broken sway bar adjuster and had it replaced in less than 10 minutes.

Steffens handy work proved to be pristine as Grave Digger marched through the brackets to make it to the UTI Championship Round to face Nicole Johnson in Scooby Doo. It was a stellar night for Scooby Doo as the truck easily made it to the final round. This would be the 5th time that Johnson and Van Horn matched up with the latter holding a 4-1 edge. The UTI Championship round was so close that the replay had to be reviewed by the judges three times to determine that Grave Digger the winner.

Advance Auto Parts Service is Our Part Freestyle proved to be the icing on the cake for the night. The only hiccup of the night was that Crushstation was not able to make it back for competition. After a hard round of racing it was discovered that there was a terminal crack in the housing for the front left tire. But Monster Jam trucks were catching air and had the fans on the edge of the seat for competition. Mike Vaters in Black Stallion bested an impressive run by Scooby Doo by mixing in some cross threading action to impress the judges and take the lead. But Black Stallion had to dodge the Grave Digger bullet and Carl Van Horn was all about taking the Double Down trying to work his way into the Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam World Finals. After several hard hits of big air and wheelies, Grave Digger had a slight electrical problem that interrupted the run with 25 seconds remaining. But it was clear that the slight interruption did not take away all the momentum of the run as Grave Digger ended strong by doubling up two hits on the track for a grand finale earning the freestyle victory.
