Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam Greensboro Friday Night
By: Joe Lowe
Double
Down for Digger driven by Charlie, Jay Snyder takes Screamin Demon over
in the Wheelie Contest, Monster Mutt Dalmatian driven by Candice Jolly
makes new friends and Radical Rob blows things up just like he did on
Nitro Circus.
It
was just another day at the office for the Advance Auto Parts Monster
Jam staff and drivers, but oh so much fun. There also was no shortage
of action or fans for the first of two big nights of action in
Greensboro N.C. Everyone was treated to one heck of a knock down event.
Even the Air Force Reserve crew got into the act giving away an
autographed Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam T-shirt to one lucky fan.
The
record books will say Charlie Pauken had a clean sweep winning all
three events but that hardly tells the story as Grave Digger had to
struggle for each and every win.
The
event began with the Wheelie Contest, each truck had two hits over the
cars. First out was Screamin Demon driven by Jay Snyder. Jay took the
truck over the first set of cars with ease but when he approached the
second set he attempted to take the big truck as high as possible. The
newly refreshed motor must have had a bit more horsepower than anyone
thought because the truck went straight up, hung in the air for a
moment and continued to go right over destroying the new 2010 body but
leaving the strong frame and the trucks powerplant in good shape. Jay
ran the rest of the evening with no bed on the truck leaving the
lettering on the side of the cab to read (in mon) as in screamIN deMON.
Digger
may have won the wheelie contest but Ricky in Mopar Magic, Steve in
Stone Crusher and Candice aboard Monster Mutt Dalmatian all were very
close.
In
racing it came down to Mopar Magic and Grave Digger, the video required
repeated review before a winner was named. With inches separating the
two trucks Grave Digger edged out Magic in the UTI racing championship.
In
the Adavance Auto Parts Monster Jam Freestyle Stone Crusher and Monster
Mutt were tied with high scores of 23 each. Grave Digger came out
hitting the Advance Auto Parts Pyramid and the Wendy’s Stacker Stack
sending the truck high into the air. Charlie kept his foot on the gas
sending the truck skyward and into the winners circle do double down
for the night.

Charlie
Pauken said during the Built Ford Tough Party in the Pits that it was
going to be very hard for Grave Digger to double down for the second
night in a row. “We have some great trucks and very experienced
drivers”, he said. “Any one of these trucks can walk away with a win in
any of the competitions. I am going to play to win but it won’t be
easy”. With that the second night of action in the Greensboro Coliseum
began.
To
be honest it looked as if Grave Digger was going to make a clean sweep
again. Charlie beat Steve Sims in Stone Crusher by two points in the
wheelie contest and beat Candice Jolly out by one point in the Advance
Auto Parts Freestyle competition. Dalmatian had a problem during the
wheelie contest when the truck shut off after the first (very
impressive) jump. The truck simply would not start and Candice had to
settle with a 17 from the judges. The truck was towed off the track and
crews went to work immediately to correct the problem. It never came
back.
The
problem for Grave Digger was racing. Monster Mutt Dalmatian beat Grave
Digger in round one effectively eliminating the black and green machine
from the racing win. For the second night in a row Ricky Ownley drove
Mopar Magic to the UTI race finals. This time the lady, Candice Jolly,
ruined Mopars night by cutting a good light are crossing the Ford
Finish line first.
It
was not an easy night for any of the trucks. Screamin Demon driven by
Jay Snyder showed signs of the first nights action with a missing body.
Crews worked on the truck thru the night and most of Saturday before it
was inspected and deemed race ready by USHRA officials.
Reptoid
owner Jim Jack continued to get his truck dialed in for the news season
as did Pat Summa with Thrasher. Bruce Haney took his Bad News truck to
the semi finals in racing and scored very high (22) in freestyle. In
short, it was no cake walk for anybody and fans saws how tough the
competition in the Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam series really is.

Jennifer,
the Canon Lady and husband Radical Rob the dynomaniac, gave fans
something to cheer about with a 120 foot flight after being shot out of
a cannon and being blown up by the equivalent of two sicks of dynamite
during the event. All in all it was an explosive night.
