Canadian Fans Love The Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour

Record setting crowds poured into Scotia Speedworld this past weekend, more evidence that the Maple Leaf Monster Jam® Tour has become a big hit with fans all across Canada. Along with the support the fans north of the border have given to their own major piece of the Monster Jam world, that Canadian pride is really in evidence every time Cam McQueen roars on to the track in “Canada’s Monster Jam truck” Northern NightmareSM, and Canada’s World Champion driver responds to those huge cheers with house rocking performances every time out.

I got the opportunity to catch the Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour live last weekend at that Halifax speed plant and it was so impressive to see how the fans there have responded to having their own special series that covers Canada coast to coast throughout the year and all of the drivers in action at Scotia Speedworld delighted in the love and support they got, spending lots of time in the stands with those fans during Saturday afternoon’s standing room only attendance and through the entire three event weekend.

As part of the continuing growth and expansion of Monster Jam worldwide, the Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour is carving out its own unique, special place in the sport. Several native Canadians make up the bulk of the staff that works in official capacities on the tour, one of whom is Darren Pallen, a Winnipeg native, the announcer who has become the “Voice of the Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour.” A proud Monster Jam and hockey loving Canadian, Pallen hosts all of the events on the tour and brings that homegrown perspective to the sport and is able to complement the exciting action with stories and statistics from the other events on the tour in the past, giving these events their own unique place in the sport today.

Every time Pallen says the words “Northern Nightmare” the crowd roars and throngs of young fans proudly begin to wave their Northern Nightmare flags, one of the hottest selling items at the merchandise stands. McQueen continues to respond to that home country support; especially in freestyle where his World Championship pedigree is easy to see each time he flies across the track.

Monster Jam has some great rivalries among teams and drivers these days and it was clear that rivalry number one on the Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour has become the intense on track battles between McQueen’s Northern Nightmare and Jon Zimmer, who was behind the wheel for Team Grave Digger® for the majority of the 2013 Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour dates. This past weekend in Nova Scotia Randy Brown was in the Grave Digger cockpit but Zimmer still found a way to continue his rivalry with McQueen, as Jon got the opportunity to fill in for Norm Miller in the Batman Monster Jam truck and thrilled the fans in that popular machine all weekend.

The on track rivalry between good friends McQueen and Zimmer clearly pushes both of them to the next level and the fans are the winners in watching this pair of superstars constantly trying to outdo their arch-rival. It proved to be an extra bonus for the fans who love that rivalry with Zimmer in Batman this time because Brown, who has plenty of experience himself competing in Canada, had no intention of letting the McQueen-Zimmer rivalry soak up all of the spotlight. Brown’s Grave Digger was lightening fast on the long asphalt race course all weekend, dominating that portion of the competition with only Alex Blackwell in Captain’s Curse® able to deny Grave Digger an undefeated racing weekend in Halifax.

It was the freestyle throw downs amongst this stellar line-up that produced the most standing ovations though, and there were several of them throughout the weekend. Maybe the longest and loudest of those tributes came in Sunday afternoon’s weekend finale where Grave Digger’s high flying, ragged edge performance was still being talked about by the fans in the autograph session lines after the event has drawn to a rocking conclusion.

The Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour has quickly been established as a special part of the sport.
