At the age of six, his Dad threw him on a Suzuki 50. Ever since then he's been an adrenaline junkie. From bikes to quads to sleds, Scott has ridden them all. Scott has said "All I ever wanted as a kid was to go fast. If it had a motor on it and it went fast, I wanted to try it." For the past 32 years, he has been riding at local motocross tracks. After high school, Scott continued his education and received his college degree. He's currently employed as a Senior Design Engineer and designs linear combustion motors for gas powered nail guns. Scott has 20 years of engineering under his belt as well as 10 United States Patents and has applied for numerous more. "This is a great job for me considering I'm a motorsports enthusiast. I get to take a combustion motor and scale it down to put in a hand held tool." Scott continued what his dad started. He put his first born daughter on a Yamaha PW50 at the age of four. With four kids now, Scott has said "We have a garage full of bikes and quads - a family that rides together, stays together. Scott started competing in the 2011 Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam season driving Iron Man. He won the 2011 Monster Jam Wow Factor of the year award.
Q&A with Scott Buetow MonsterJam.com: How did you get started competing on the Monster Jam circuit?
Scott Buetow: I’ve been around motor sports my whole life and have been riding motocross since I was a kid. I got an opportunity to test in 2008 to see if I’d be a good fit. Everything went well but at the time they weren’t building any new trucks nor had any openings. In 2010 I received a call from Feld Motor Sports wanting to know if I was still interested in driving. Obviously I jumped all over that one and the best thing of it all was that they were building another Iron Man truck for the upcoming 2011 Monster Jam season. Being a Marvel fan, that right there was the best thing I heard and the icing on the cake. I drove Monster Mutt in Mexico City that November of 2010 and the rest is history.
MonsterJam.com: What do you enjoy doing while on the road with Monster Jam? Scott Buetow: I love meeting all the awesome fans during pit parties. I also enjoy relaxing and hanging out with my the crew.
MonsterJam.com: What do you do with your free time? Scott Buetow: Free time? What’s that? Ha, well I have four kids so they keep me busy and on my toes. I do still ride motocross at local tracks whenever I can. My kids all ride so it’s fun taking them and watching them grow and enjoy sport as well.
MonsterJam.com: What is your greatest memory as a monster truck driver? Scott Buetow: I was in Minneapolis this year (2012) and 2 fans (Mother and son) were at the pit party and said we drove up from Illinois to see me. It turns out they live only few blocks from where I live. They had a huge IRON MAN sign and I saw them sitting midfield when I came out for freestyle. That jacked me up and I placed 2nd in freestyle that show. It’s the fans that I remember the most about the shows and what really matters to me.
MonsterJam.com: Do you have any pre-show rituals that you run though? Scott Buetow: I just like to get in my seat early and buckle up. I hate rushing before a show.
MonsterJam.com: If you were not competing on the Monster Jam tour, what career path would you follow? Scott Buetow: I’ve been doing engineering for 20 years now, so I guess I’d still be going down that path. I know, boring, right?
MonsterJam.com: What’s your favorite food? Scott Buetow: Chicago deep dish pizza
MonsterJam.com: What’s your favorite movie? Scott Buetow: Without a doubt IRON MAN……..then THOR
MonsterJam.com: What’s your favorite television show? Scott Buetow: Hands down Monster Jam
MonsterJam.com: What’s your favorite color? Scott Buetow: Blue
