Q&A with Randy Moore
MonsterJam.com: How did you get started competing on the Monster Jam circuit?

Randy Moore: I was born the son of Bristol Motor Speedway and IHRA co-founder Carl R. Moore. I started my first business while in high school (Rock ‘n’ Roll Skateboard Shop) and started mud racing when I was 15 years old. One weekend, my dad was out of town and I borrowed his Jeep Cherokee. I took it to the local mud hole and I won. I still got in trouble for taking his Jeep, but the first-place trophy opened my dad’s eyes enough to see that I might be able to do something with racing! I mud raced for TNT and USHRA for several years, winning numerous races in a Jeep named Stumpy, running against the likes of Dennis Anderson in the early years and Tom Meents in the later years. From there, I did some sand drag racing and was the first and only person to win three classes with the same vehicle. This feat was achieved at the prestigious Gravelrama, where I took first in the flat drags, uphill drags, and the big Elm hill. These wins inspired me to want to go real fast, so I enrolled in Frank Hawley’s School of Drag Racing and earned my Alcohol Funny Car License. Eventually, my good friend, Blaine Kilby, and I built the Tosti Asti sponsored Pro Modified Lamborghini. It was the quickest doorslammer in history at 6.59 seconds in a quarter mile. I was also named IHRA Rookie of the Year. I stayed in Pro-Mod off and on for seven years, moved over to mountain motor pro-stock for one season, and then ran a few races in NHRA Pro-Stock driving Mike Thomas’ second car. It was at one of those events that there was a Grave Digger Truck on display. Aaron Polburn happened to be standing beside me and I was quoted saying something to the likes of, “I would drive the wheels off that beast!” Well, you see where that got me! I have been driving the War Wizard monster truck, ever since!

MonsterJam.com: What do you enjoy doing while on the road with Monster Jam?

Randy Moore: Meeting and talking to all the fans. Monster Jam is a special event as it allows the fans and drivers to be in constant contact with each other, taking pictures and sharing stories, etc. And, when I can make a kid smile, it is worth everything to me.

MonsterJam.com: What do you do with your free time?

Randy Moore: I have never heard of free time between racing and fixing the War Wizard. I’m always busy running my Motorsports Displays business, going to my kids’ football, tennis, volleyball, swimming, and softball activities. I also sneak in some surfing; wakeboarding barefootin’; four-wheeling; playing with my dogs; and most importantly, working on my lake house.

MonsterJam.com: What is your greatest memory as a monster truck Randy Moore?

Randy Moore: That is a tough one. There are a couple of them: winning my first race and freestyle against Grave Digger, making it to my first World Finals, and being one of the trucks invited to the first live Speed TV show in Atlanta.

MonsterJam.com: Do you have any pre-show rituals that you run though?

Randy Moore: I like to look at the track and try to lay out my freestyle run. And before I run, I must get a text from my two kids, whishing me luck.

MonsterJam.com: If you were not competing on the Monster Jam tour, what career path would you follow?

Randy Moore: I would like to have been a professional water skier. They have the life—competing in events all over the world. Or, I would like to have owned and run a professional football team! But not like Jerry Jones!!!

MonsterJam.com: What’s your favorite food?

Randy Moore: Ice cream, coffee ice cream. I could eat it night and day!

MonsterJam.com: What’s your favorite movie?

Randy Moore: Endless Summer

MonsterJam.com: What’s your favorite television show?

Randy Moore: Monster Jam, of course! Football/headline news and Nancy Grace

MonsterJam.com: What’s your favorite color?

Randy Moore: It’s a tie: purple and yellow
